What is the difference between tons and BTU?
Both measure cooling capacity: 1 ton = 12,000 BTU per hour. Split units are sold as 1 ton (12,000 BTU), 1.5 ton (18,000 BTU), 2 ton (24,000 BTU) and up.
What makes a room need a bigger unit?
West- or south-facing walls, large windows, a top-floor roof, high ceilings, poor insulation, a kitchen nearby, or many people using the room.
What happens if the AC is the wrong size?
Too small: it runs non-stop and never reaches the set temperature. Too big: it cycles on and off, leaves the room clammy and costs more to buy.
