What can I check myself?
Mode is set to Cool, the filter is clean, nothing blocks the outdoor unit, and windows and doors are closed. Switch the unit off if water is leaking or ice forms on the pipes.
Why does topping up gas not fix it for long?
A split is a sealed system. If gas is low there's a leak, and it will run low again until the leak is found and repaired.
